Frequently Asked Questions

Kapok pillows don’t have to be washed because they are resistant to dust mites and moisture. To refresh and to re-fluff your pillow, simply place it in the sun for a few hours: Kapok loves the sun. You can also tumble it in a warm dryer with tennis balls in order to get the fluff back in.

You can however wash the outer shell if needed. Unzip it, remove all the Kapok and keep it aside. Wash the pillow shell with the zip closed. Dry on the line, then take out any bits of Kapok that may be left behind, and finally re-fill your pillow with the saved Kapok. The shell may shrink a tiny bit.

If, for some reason, you do decide to wash your whole pillow, please be aware that the Kapok filling will take a very long time to dry and may become clumpy in the process.

To wash the outer shell, unzip it and remove all the Kapok. Wash the pillow shell with the zip closed. Dry on the line, then take out any bits of Kapok that may be left behind, and finally re-fill your pillow with the saved Kapok. The shell may shrink a tiny bit.

For both, Cotton and Linen shell, we recommend a machine wash on delicate cycle in cold water, or hand wash in cold water. Choosing lower temperatures reduces the risk of shrinkage. Use a gentle eco-friendly laundry detergent and avoid conventional softeners as well as bleach, as they can damage the fabric. To further protect your pillow shell, always wash it with similar colours. Re-shape while wet and hang or lay flat to dry.

●  For your convenience, your Kapok pillow has a zip on the side. This can be used if you choose to remove the filling to either clean the pillow shell or adjust the comfort of the pillow. Please be aware that the light and fluffy nature of Kapok means that some of the fibres may become airborne when you remove the filling. These fibres may be irritating to the eyes.

●  Because Kapok is such a natural product, which is hand processed, it is perfectly normal for there to be fragments of other related plant material (such as leaf or parts of the seedpod) amongst the fibres. This does not impact the health or comfort of the pillow. If, in the unlikely event, you notice something like a small piece of leaf stem, this can easily be removed via the zip on the side if you wish.

●  When Kapok is freshly harvested, it usually has a light, natural aroma. However, this dissipates over time.

●  While Kapok is moisture repellent, it is not waterproof. If it does get wet, it can take a long time to dry.

Kapok fibres are hollow and air filled, which makes the floss buoyant and moisture repellent. It is naturally immune to pests of any kind, be it during gathering, transporting, storing or use.

Thanks to Kapok’s ability to repel moisture, your pillow will not breed any mould, mildew, dust mites, or other allergens. Unlike other pillows that have to be replaced every six months, your Kapok pillow will serve you for many years, even decades, and only the outer shell needs to be washed or changed.

All our pillow shells are made from high quality non-toxic materials and are very breathable, comfortable and long-lasting. However, there are some minor differences between the fabrics.

🌱 Our LINEN shells are made from naturally organic premium European flax which has gone through minimal processing and is very close to its natural state. Linen fabric is antibacterial, anti-fungal, highly breathable and moisture wicking. Perfect for hot sleepers and people with allergies and sensitivities. The pillow shell comes in colour greige and has a slightly rough finish, keeping the fabric as natural as possible.

Linen is also one of the most eco friendly textiles, since growing it doesn’t require water, fertilisers or pesticides, and it is fully biodegradable.

🌱 Our COTTON pillow shells are made from GOTS certified organic cotton, offering a traditional yet reliable choice for comfort and softness. Naturally hypoallergenic and breathable, our cotton pillow shell is perfect for the whole family. It comes in a natural off-white colour, reflecting its minimal processing.

While not as sustainable as linen, organic cotton is still a gentle, chemical-free option for those who prefer a classic, comfortable sleep surface. Fully biodegradable, our cotton pillow shells provide a healthier, more traditional choice for your bedding needs.

Whether you choose linen or cotton, is totally up to you, however we’re confident that either of them will serve you well and for a very long time.

Our pillow shells are made from high quality organic linen and cotton which will not irritate your skin and will feel soft, cooling and pleasant. The zippered pillow shell is washable, however, in order to wash it you will need to remove the Kapok filling. Therefore, it is a good idea to use a pillow case which you can easily take off and wash as necessary. It’s totally up to you though!

Our pillows are the standard Australian size 45cm x 70cm and will fit your regular pillow case.

Your pillow comes stuffed with 750g of Kapok. If initially it feels too high, you can easily adjust it to your needs by unzipping the pillow shell and removing some of the filling. Keep this spare filling in a separate bag. You will notice that over time the pillow will settle and compress a little. Just add more Kapok back in until you find the perfect fit.

Over time, Kapok naturally settles, gently adjusting to your sleeping habits. Our pillows are filled to a comfortable medium loft, but if you ever want to add a bit more fluff, you can easily top them up with additional Kapok filling. Shop Kapok Fibre

We suggest giving your pillow a little TLC by placing it in direct sunlight for a few hours now and then—Kapok loves soaking up the sun! If you prefer, you can pop your pillow in the tumble dryer with three clean tennis balls for a gentle massage. It’ll come out looking big and fluffy again.

For daily care, just give your pillow a quick pat around before bed each night to keep it comfy and cozy.

Our high quality Kapok fill comes from Java, Indonesia. By purchasing our pillows you help local economies in the tropical region.

All our pillow shells are made in a GOTS certified small textile factory in India.

The pillows are manually assembled by us personally, on the Central Coast, Australia.
